History @ Coney Hill
The study of history ignites children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children understand how the past influences the present. At Coney Hill Primary, we want our pupils to be inspired to know more about our local history, the history of Britain and that of the ancient world. Knowledge of the past can help them to understand the challenges of our own time. We want to engage pupils in questions about people, places and events in the past, in order to help them to understand the present, all whilst gaining a sense of chronology and their place in history. We also want to promote taking pride in being a Historian, and learning about the past.
Our children will learn about significant events over history and the impact they had on the people of those times and today. They will develop a sense of respect and empathy for what societies before them have experienced through learning about specific and relevant events. This in turn, will help them to develop a healthy respect for the world we live in today and how that has been shaped by history.
We want to inspire pupils’ curiosity to discover more about the past and to develop an understanding that enables them to enjoy all that history has to offer. We aim to motivate to our pupils through active and engaging activities, visitors and experiences, to give all pupils opportunities to question the past.
We fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for History; providing a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum for our children to engage with. History education should be fully inclusive to every child ensuring the progressive development of historical knowledge, skills and vocabulary; and for the children to develop a love for history.
History has a wide application to everyday life, teaching the children to enjoy learning about the past and to have a better understanding of the society in which they live. We aim to help children understand society and their place within it, so that they develop a sense of their cultural heritage. Our city is culturally rich in History and our intent is to use a primary resource.
As citizens of the world, our children will understand that the events of history have a significant impact on who they are today. What children learn through History, can influence their decisions about personal choice, attitudes and values.

Year 3 learnt lots about the Ancient Egyptians today at their visit to the Bristol museum. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who came too!
Year 4 had a brilliant trip to Caerleon Roman Fortress and Baths

Anglo-Saxon and Viking experience day
Year 5 this week started off our final theme of the year with a bang (or rather an invasion!) On Tuesday this week the Diamonds (Vikings) and Rubies (Anglo-Saxons) came to school dressed up for the occasion and fully enjoyed their experience day with Portals To The Past. We started our day by exploring the who ruled Britain before the Anglo, Saxon and Jutes invasion (the Romans) and how this led to our country being divided into many smaller countries. Following this we learnt how the Anglos and Saxons joined forces to become Anglo-Saxons ahead of the Viking invasions. After an overview of the period, we explored this further by using our VIPER skills to answer quiz questions using information around the hall. Following this, we played an Anglo-Saxon game of Fox and Geese before solving kenning riddles for Literacy. Before lunch we had a Q and A with Portals To The Past where we could ask any questions about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings before singing Head-Shoulders-Knees-and-Toes in Old Norse Language. Finally in the afternoon we explored the weapons of the time, practised our battle ready poses and buried an Anglo-Saxon king before finally welcoming them to the afterlife. It was truly a packed and exciting day for all of Year 5 who have taken so much from today’s learning ready to support their learning for the rest of the term.
Year 6 evacuation experience
On Wednesday 12th October, Year 6 travelled to Winchcombe Train Station in order to take part in a evacuation experience! As part of their World War Two theme (Blitz & Pieces), the children were taken through the station and transported into Britain in the 1940s, when the country was at war with Germany. They heard stories from real life evacuees, had their own trip on the majestic steam train, helped catch a German spy, took part in an air raid siren, discovered lots of genuine artefacts from the war and even learnt how to put out an incendiary bomb fire using a stirrup hose and pipe! So much great learning was had by all! Year 6 would like to thank GSWR at Winchcombe for all of their hospitality and the fantastic experience.
