School Council

At Coney Hill, we believe that our children should contribute to the life of our school community and the community around them.

Our School Council plays an essential part in achieving this aim, where children can share their views and ideas, representing their classmates, to help us make our school the best it can be - one that we can all be PROUD of. It is an essential part of the School Council’s responsibility, to uphold the school's core PREACH values: Purpose & Pride, Respect, Enjoyment, Achieve & Aspire, Community, Health and Well-being.

Some of our school council visited Hash at Gloucester Feed The Hungry to drop off our collected donations for his Christmas Appeal.

Some of our school council representatives delivered Harvest Hampers to nominated people in the Community. They then visited ‘Smiles’ cafe in Gloucester, to drop off food donations to Hash’s team at Gloucester Feed the Hungry! Thank you to everyone for their kind donations!

Visit from Hash from Gloucester Feed the Hungry

As part of World Kindness Day and Anti-bullying week, Hash from Gloucester Feed the Hungry came to visit us and held an assembly about how we can support our local community and vulnerable people. He also held a meeting with our School Council to discuss what we can do this Christmas to support our community.

Our School Council aims to encourage our children to:

  • To have a ‘voice’ and to share their opinions and ideas with others
  • Become more confident, resilient and independent, and to develop strength of character
  • Develop confidence, a sense of responsibility and make the most of their abilities
  • Prepare them to play an active role as citizens
  • Develop good relationships with peers, stakeholders and other adults in school
  • Have mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
Council

Our School Council will give children the experience of:

  • Planning, organising and monitoring small projects
  • Speaking and listening skills to include working with external professionals
  • Debating skills
  • Mediation and negotiating skills
  • Basic budgeting and managing money
  • Preparing our pupils for citizenship, by teaching them about roles, rights and responsibilities within the school system
  • Preparing a proposal, manage any delegated funds and report on the impact
  • Sharing information with their class, and get ideas and views from their peers

We hold regular meetings with the School Council, to discuss projects, any issues raised by their classmates, and ideas for improving the school and the community.  Pupil representatives are responsible for giving feedback to their individual classes and listening to their ideas and suggestions, in readiness to feedback at the next council meeting.  

Elections

Upholding the British value of democracy, class elections are held at the start of every year so that different representatives can put forward their election speeches as well as developing the full potential of the School Councils to complete tasks.  Those children wishing to be elected, must prepare and deliver a speech to their peers. The class then votes for their representatives.

School Council Team

The School Council Team is led by the school council teaching partner lead and the assistant head. Working alongside the children, they will prepare the agenda for each meeting and support the children to write minutes. They will also ensure that school staff are informed of decisions made.

What has our School Council achieved so far?

  • Our School Council members have recently delivered wonderful food hampers to people in our local community.
  • We gave out Pride of Coney Awards to local businesses who have kindly donated valuable resources to our school.
  • We have been busy tidying up our outside areas. These lovely new planters, flowers and seeds have all been purchased by the money we have recently raised.

We are also running a School Council club every Wednesday after school leading up to Christmas in order to get a head start on all the jobs we need to do.           

Can you help?

This term our focus is to revamp our outside area. We have tasked our school council members to try to persuade family members, friends and located businesses to donate the following:

  • Plants
  • Soil / compost
  • Planters
  • Eergreen trees for our benches
  • Outdoor paint
